Barcelona 4-1 Arsenal (agg. 6-3)

Messi is the sixth player to score four goals in a Champions League match

Lionel Messi lit up the Nou Camp with a stunning four-goal haul to beat Arsenal and maintain Barcelona's bid for back-to-back Champions League titles.Nicklas Bendtner stunned the Spaniards with an 18th-minute opener to put Arsenal ahead in the tie but Messi quickly replied with a superb drive.Pedro teed the Argentine up for his second and a cool lob completed his first-half hat-trick in some style.Messi put the seal on victory with a late solo strike for his fourth. The 6-3 aggregate win sets up an intriguing semi-final meeting with Jose Mourinho's Inter Milan, although in this kind of form few teams will be capable of preventing Messi and Barcelona from retaining the trophy.Arsenal, though, more than played their part in a superb quarter-final tie, having come from 2-0 down in the first leg to lead 3-2 on aggregate in the Nou Camp.

Lionel Messi's Barcelona left the Emirates Stadium level after the first leg of the Champions League, after Arsenal made a dramatic comeback.

The game finished 2-2 and lived up to its billing as the tie of the round in the first leg of the Champions League quarter final. Barcelona imposed themselves on the game from the very start and even though there were no goals in the first half, Barcelona dominated proceedings, creating many opportunities and having the majority of the possession.

Barcelona's dominance was rewarded in the first minute of the second half. A terrific pass put Ibrahimovic, who had squandered several first half chances, through. Arsenal goalkeeper Almunia tried to meet the ball, but instead Ibrahimovic lobbed the ball over him to put the Blaugrana a goal to the good.

Just before the hour mark, Ibrahimovic made it two. Another glorious through ball led to Zlatan facing Almunia in another one-on-one. Ibrahimovic fired the ball emphatically into the roof of the goal, giving Barcelona a fantastic two goal lead.

Arsenal hit back quickly, after the introduction of Theo Walcott. On the 69th minute, Walcott raced through on goal and struck the ball through the hands of Victor Valdes. The comeback was complete on the 85th minute. Carles Puyol was sent off for blocking a clear shot on goal and Fabregas scored the penalty.

Lionel Messi had some good touches throughout and lost possession infrequently, but he was unable to make a mark on the game. It remains a good result for Barcelona who now have two away goals to take back to the Camp Nou next week.

History of FC Barcelona

Futbol Club Barcelona is a football club based in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain. The team was founded in 1899 by a group of Swiss, English and Spanish men led by Joan Gamper. The club has become a Catalan institution, hence the motto "Més que un club" (More than a club).
FC Barcelona is one of only three clubs never to have been relegated from La Liga and the most successful club in Spanish football after Real Madrid, having won nineteen La Liga titles, a record twenty-five Spanish Cups, eight Spanish Super Cups, four Eva Duarte Cups and two League Cups. They are also one of the most successful clubs in European football having won fourteen official major trophies in total, including ten UEFA competitions. They have won three UEFA Champions League titles, a record four UEFA Cup Winners' Cups, a record three Inter-Cities Fairs Cups (the forerunner to the UEFA Europa League), three UEFA Super Cups and one FIFA Club World Cup. In 2009, Barcelona became the first club in Spain to win the treble of La Liga, Copa del Rey and Champions League. The club is also the only European side to have played continental football in every season since its inception in 1955. FC Barcelona became the first football team ever to win six out of six competitions in a single year thus completing the sextuple, comprising the 2008–09 La Liga, 2008–09 Copa del Rey, 2009 Supercopa de España, 2008–09 UEFA Champions League, 2009 UEFA Super Cup and 2009 FIFA Club World Cup.
Barcelona holds a long-standing rivalry with Real Madrid, with matches between the two teams referred to as "El Clásico". Unlike many other football clubs, the fans of FC Barcelona own and operate the club. The club is the world's second richest football club (€365m) in terms of revenue, only surpassed by Real Madrid.
